Research Assistant position available in 2020

A Research Assistant position will be available soon in the Molecular Ecology, Evolution, and Phylogenetics Lab in the School of Life and Environmental Sciences, University of Sydney. This position will be advertised in January 2020 and the successful candidate will be able to commence immediately. This is a full-time position that is funded for 12 months, but it can be taken at 0.5 FTE over a period of 24 months if preferred.

Responsibilities

The Research Assistant will provide technical and research support for the ARC-funded project “Characterising rates of molecular evolution across the Tree of Life”. Under the supervision of the Chief Investigator Simon Ho, the responsibilities of the Research Assistant will include developing an online database with a public web interface, populating the database with curated scientific data, constructing and maintaining relevant web sites, and providing technical and computational assistance to academics and research students collaborating on the project. There will be opportunities for preparing research for publication and for communicating the results of the work at conferences and other scientific outlets.

  • Tertiary qualifications in appropriate discipline (may have, or be working towards, postgraduate qualifications)
  • Interests in phylogenomics, population genetics, evolutionary biology, or molecular evolution
  • Experience in working with whole-genome data and genome assembly
  • Skills for constructing an online database and public web interface (e.g., SQL, JavaScript, and HTML)
  • Programming skills for scientific data analysis (Python, R)
